Senior Ruhama Tereda had a very successful summer as she entered the world of politics.
Tereda was one of nine juniors (now seniors) chosen to attend the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State government simulation event in Vermillion, and was elected to the top office at the event, governor.
She was in Vermillion for six days at the event.
“The whole week was very intense,” Tereda said. “It was inspiring to be surrounded in an environment of motivated young women who ultimately encouraged me to run for governor.”
As she progressed through primaries and worked on her platform, “Phenomenal Woman,” she drew inspiration from Maya Angelou’s poem and highlighted her notion that character and heart, despite what society imposes upon you, should always be embraced. Her goal was to send a message of self empowerment and the idea of being an informed and empathetic citizen.
“Upon being elected, I was fortunate enough to receive love from both of the parties,” Tereda said. “It was an amazing testament to the power of Girls State to unify, despite different party allegiances.”
Tereda made a point to offer the other parties candidates cabinet positions and to include them as she reviewed the bills that passed the senate.
Tereda said she would recommend the experience of Girls or Boys State to this year’s and future juniors.
“Overall, it was a remarkable experience that makes me very excited for Girls State next year where I have the opportunity to preside as the governor,” she said.
