Warrior varsity football team members took a third consecutive State 11AAA title and 34th consecutive win, defeating Roosevelt 20-19 Nov. 11 at the DakotaDome in Vermillion.
Within the first five minutes of the game, Roosevelt had a lead of 10 points, but the Warriors made a comeback in the second quarter, tying up the score with a touchdown from senior Shiloh Flanagan and a 20-yard field goal from senior Brock Walker. Junior Tupak Kpeayeh then scored another touchdown, putting the Warriors in the lead.
It all went down to the last minute, as Roosevelt went for two and the win following a late fourth-quarter score, but were stopped by a tenacious Warrior defense.
The Warriors had a total of 357 yards in the win, including 32 carries for 204 yards and a touchdown from Kpeayeh. Junior quarterback Jayden Johannsen completed 11 of 18 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown, which went to senior Shiloh Flanagan, who finished the night with four catches for 95 yards.
Senior Zach Heins said it was a great way to earn a third championship ring.
“We did whatever we had to do to win, and in the end of the night my hand got a little heavier,” Heins said.
